Rolf Binder @ Veritas Winery started the new vintage for 2009 this last week.
It is often laughingly said, but it really does take a lot of beer to make a good wine.
And really loud rock music. (Classical also works, but stay away from easy listening if you don't want vinegar!)
From left to right is Harry Mantzarapis; Adam Barton; flying winemaker visiting from Tuscany, Paulo Piedlandozzi; Rolf Binder; and winemaking student, Peter Griscti. Missing is Ashley Riebke and Christa Deans.
The vintage is looking to be a reasonable one, with the seriously hot weather coming and quickly going early in the season before we had even thought about picking. The lovely cool weather we are experiencing now is actually allowing the fruit to ripen slowly and within its own time.
Which means that the winemakers and cellar hands can work with the fruit and there is no need to panic.
Of course, the only ones not enjoying these lovely cool summer days are the thousands of international visitors to the Barossa who have escaped their snowy northern hemisphere winters for the sun. One Californian visitor commented that it was warmer back home than it is in southern Australia right now!
Cement is being poured at the new winery in December, 1998.
