We met Ann and Ian from Adelaide yesterday, discovering the Valley on the Barossa Cheese and Wine Trail. With them they brought their good friends, Hester and Chris from South Africa.
Hester and Chris are visiting Australia to catch up with their son, his wife, and their two grandchildren for the Christmas break.
While tasting the range of locally made cheeses, for four tried some of Rolf Binder's wonderful white wines. They were particularly enchanted by the combination of the 2008 Christa Rolf Barossa Valley Semillon, matched with the award winning Wanera Washed Rind from the Barossa Valley Cheese Company.
The 2008 Christa Rolf Semillon is made from 100% estate-grown fruit and has a lovely fresh nose, with aromas of citrus and freshly cut grass. A hint of French oak adds a subtle creaminess to the crisp palate.
Although we love it when drunk young and cold, it does have some ageing potential. Cellar it to five years of age and serve at room-temperature (Winter, not Summer!) which will draw forth the creamy cashew and grassy notes.
