Visitors to our Tasting Room in the beautiful Barossa Valley will notice some interesting artworks on the walls. We run our Tasting Room as an Art Exhibition Space, giving local South Australian artists a chance to show off their new creations, or blow the dust off some of their older pieces. This also gives our Tasting Room a fresh look and atmosphere every month.
The artworks on the walls for the month of December are by Adelaide artist, Denise Gaskell. The works are wall hangings, made up of natural sheeps wool, felted wool, embroidery, silks, organza, threads, beads, and all sorts of other textures, to create realistic, yet fantastical, images of the Australian bush. The subjects are sourced from some of the beautiful and unique sites around South Australia.
"Inspiration for much of my work comes from private and public gardens,
architecture, frequent trips to the coast, country and Flinders Rangers.
I produce realistic representations of scenery, birds, animals and plants,
hoping to encourage viewers to take a closer look. Even rocks and leaf
debris warrant a closer look. From childhood I have pursued interests in
drawing, painting, sewing, knitting, embroidery and photography.
Whilst taking a career break to have a family, I took sewing and
embroidery from clothing into quilting. I now produce textile art which
incorporate techniques including hand and free machine applique and
embroidery, quilting, beading, painting, printing, wool felting and anything
else that seems appropriate.
I am continually looking for some new and exciting techniques or products
that will help me achieve the effect I am aiming for. This is a
continuously evolving process - even during the development of each art
piece. I tend to include a lot of hand work on my pieces. Hand
embroidery and applique allows me to obtain results that can't be
achieved by machine. I use all kinds of fibre, threads, ribbons and beads
which, along with fabric manipulation techniques, layering of sheer fabrics
and the occasional application of dye, paint or ink, to produce a highly
textual piece of art that takes advantage of light and shadow as well as
colour."
Denise's exhibition will be on until the 31st of December, and everyone is welcome to drop by for a splash of wine and to marvel at these amazing works. Every piece is for sale, and may be just the perfect Christmas gift for that special someone. To see more of Denise's work click onto her website Toffee Apple Designs.
If you know of any artists who might have some works they would like to exhibit in our Tasting Room, please get them to contact Julie on 08 8562 3300, and we can show off their works in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere.
