The Binder Tree

Sunday, 16 August 2009

Dear Rolf,

We felt moved to get in touch. For 12 years the comment that you made whilst you were having dinner with my wife and I in Tanunda has rung in our ears every time we opened a bottle of your wine.

October 27th 1997, the old de-stemmer by the door, and blending taking place by Binder bounding up and down barrels, stacked at least 3 high, maybe 4; with a plastic pipe in one hand and a glass in the other. You also took us to "the Binder Tree"; we never did find it ourselves later that day but did see a lot of the Barossa country side.

Well, we did take note of what you said which was "The problem with Australian wines is that no one keeps them long enough to know how they develop". We wanted you to know that last week we opened our last bottle of 1993 Shiraz, Hanisch Vineyard. Not in your face Shiraz, but a balanced fresh wine with an abundance of fruit and, dare I say it, refined and almost elegant, a wonderful round Shiraz taste which went on quite a bit.

We also opened a bottle of the 2000 Heysen Shiraz, which has improved considerably over the years. We have 2 bottles left and one bottle of the 1997 Shiraz Heysen vineyard, so all is not lost and forgotten.

You will no doubt remember your presentation at Lay and Wheelers, unlikely that you wiil remember us although you did make reference to our Australian visit and even took our photograph for your scrapbook.

Best wishes to you and your family, is a Binder/Henschke union still a possibility, children must be elderly teenagers now, and do you still exchange a case of your best wines with Stephen and Prue???

Geoff and Carol Mee

NOTE: The "Binder Tree" is an old river redgum on our Western Ridge vineyard, surrounded by our old Grenache and Shiraz that make up the Christa Rolf Shiraz Grenache. The silhouette of this tree appeared on early labels of the Christa Rolf.

Rolf Binder Senior bought grapes from this vineyard in the late-fifties. Rolf Junior then went on to purchase this property in 1984 to include in the Veritas Estate.

Cellar hands for the first vintage in the present winery in 1999. Peter Healy (on the left) and Troy Kalleske have both gone on to brilliant careers. Peter as a senior sommelier in Sydney and Troy who is now making terrific wines off the family property at Greenock, Barossa.
