We had a surprise visit to our Tasting room this week.
Cellar door Wine Stylist, Julie, loves people , and is always interested in where they come from and what interesting things are going on their lives.
It took quite a bit of snooping, but she discovered the owners of Veritas Winery in the Tasting Room, all the way from Virginia, USA.
Sharing the same name in the same market was a little awkward when the US company started up in 2002, but it inspired us to evolve our brand into Rolf Binder Wines, paying homage to our father, and introducing the new generation of Binder family winemakers.
Andrew and Patricia Hodson run their winery at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. They came upon the name 'veritas' through the previous owner's association with Harvard, and the Harvard memorabilia with its "Veritas" logo he had left behind on the property. It was also through Andrew's daughter Emily, now the winemaker, who stated that the most important lesson she had been taught by her parents when she was young was to always tell the truth. The association with "In Vino Veritas" - in wine there is truth, came much later.
Always the genial host, Rolf took them for a tour of the winery and a taste of some of the wines out of tank and barrel.
The Afton region of Virginia is cooler than the Barossa, so it was interesting for Andrew and Rolf to compare notes while strolling around the cellar, tasting as they went.
Andrew commented on how often people came to his business looking to taste or buy his famed "Bull's Blood". Due to this, they ordered a bottle for their daughter to enjoy when she was dining in a Sydney restaurant recently.
Although there are many wineries in the world, we all share a common goal to make good wine, to share with good food and good friends.
Rolf hopes to make it to Virginia soon to share some Veritas wines with our new good friends, the Hodson's.
