We see a lot of Canadian fans of Rolf Binder Wines in our Tasting Room.
Enzo, Linda, Karen, Anne and Mike come from Port Coquitlam, a river port town east of Vancouver in British Colombia.
Known by the locals as "PoCo", the town sits at the confluence of the Fraser River and the Pitt River. The Coquitlam River borders it on the west, and this is where the world revered Canadian Salmon come to spawn. Coquitlam is an indigenous Canadian word for "Little Red Fish", obviously referring to the salmon.
Karen and Mike had seen some of the Rolf Binder Wines in Coquitlam at their good friend John's wine store. So they were pleased to find themselves in the Barossa Valley where they could taste more of the Rolf Binder range.
One surprise they had not counted on was the Magpie Estate range of wines.
Along their travels they had encountered the Magpie Estate Sack Shiraz in a restaurant in Sydney. They were overwhelmed by is rich berry fruits and silky tannins.
The quintet had no idea who or where the Magpie Estate was, and were amazed to find themselves tasting the off-dry and very elegant Magpie Estate Salvation Gewurztraminer in the Rolf Binder Tasting Room.
Wine Stylist Julie found them a bottle of the Sack Shiraz out in the cellar to take away. On her return to the Tasting Room she enquired of Rolf, who was playing "Frank the Forklift Driver", where in Vancouver her guests could buy Magpie Estate wines.
Rolf immediately grabbed the bottle of shiraz from Julie and graffiti-ed it, much to her dismay, but much to Karen's delight to have a signed bottle from the winemaker.
However, it won't be one she will drink for a while, so Julie had to find a second bottle of Sack with strict instructions not to let it near Rolf!
